Sophomore's Savior

"It’s hard not to wonder what I could have, should have, would have done to save her. I suppose I’ll always wonder. I can re-play every conversation, every fight, every memory over&over searching for an answer or solution, but I know it will never bring her back. I always knew that. Even when she was here, I knew I couldn’t change things. What my Bunni did was what my Bunni did and I just had to take what I could get.
Those stages of grief they talk about never came full circle for me, because I definitely never hit the “bargaining” one. I accepted from the moment I heard she’d really done it that she was gone and there was no bringing her back. There was only dealing. Only living. Only remembering what I could. Loving what I’d had. Missing it, of course, but not hoping for it to return. She was gone. Sure, I wish I’d saved her – I’ll always wish that – but I didn’t.
She had definitely saved me, though, from a lot. Honestly, I think we both saved each other – it was just that ultimate “save” that I missed somehow. But it’s not like I was always the “solid” one in our pair. In fact, if she’d never saved me, I’m sure I couldn’t have held on to her as long as I did – her efforts in the beginning that lead to my efforts toward the end.Heaving in a bush a block from my apartment building – that’s what I had lowered myself to in my bulimia haze. That Qudoba Gumbo had been spectacular on the way down, but I certainly couldn’t leave it in my body. Sorority Formal Recruitment was coming up and there was still a solid month of shorts & tank top weather, so access body weight was not an option. This had become my ritual that summer – either a bush, public restroom, or a plastic bag while the shower ran… I couldn’t have my brother hearing me barf in the bathroom we shared and I couldn’t leave any evidence. I’d accepted my habit, but I knew he wouldn’t. Slowly, my walks to class had gotten harder – my tired, hunchy body ran out of breath much more easily without all that nasty food to keep it energized. I’d convinced myself that the energy was uglywho needs to stand up straight because they ate 3 full meals? I’d come to love my rounded shoulders and protruding hip bones – there’s more beauty in my control than your energy, you eaters.
The first night her&I spent as roommates was for Recruitment Retreat at our sorority house. I wanted to impress her. Yes, I was dating someone and so was she, but I wanted so badly to catch her eye. My tiny body would certainly be impressive. She also was tiny, though.
Damnit, she’s been working hard all summer, too. I remember irritatedly thinking – hoping my efforts wouldn’t go unnoticed.
They didn’t. As I pulled on my Victoria’s Secret PINK pj bottoms she lounged in her red desk chair trying not to watch me change – a task she later admitted was much more difficult than she’d expected.
You been blowin’ coke all summer, girl?” she blurted.
Satisfaction. I shook my head as I slipped my shirt over my bony shoulders.
I didn’t start eating “normal meals” again until her & I were in full swing about 4 months later. By then she knew it wasn’t cocaine that was keeping the skin attached to my bones. She knew what I was doing. Yet never seemed phased. Truthfully, I think she wanted someone to save – something to distract herself with – someone who needed more help than she did. She never made a negative comment. I only heard constant reassurance of how beautiful I was and how lucky she was to have me. She never forced me into eating. I always knew the offer was on the table, though. And eventually, my comfort with her and in us brought me back around. I wanted energy for her. But more than that – I didn’t seem to want anything anymore... I didn’t need to be tiny – I didn’t need to vomit. My happiness had eliminated those thoughts. I don’t remember a turning point. I don’t remember clenching a toilet seat thinking, This is the last time, girl, cause you don’t need to do this again. I only remember not doing it – not worrying anymore. An effortless transition to health – and maybe some added pounds I'd have disliked had I been paying attention, but I wasn’t thinking about my appearance by her side. I just lived. Ate, drank, loved, and lived."

Healthy's Sake

I wanted to make a conscious effort when I started seeing Mr.U not to let the insecurities with my body get in the way. I wanted to be confident in public and confident in bed – and at the time I definitely wasn’t.
So I planned to shed a little.
Mentions turned to conversations – his obsession with healthy eating and daily workouts brought back my obsession with little eating and vigorous cardio.
I never wanted him to look at me as fragile or needy or falling apart. I never wanted him to think of me as depriving myself or inflicting pain.
But, I’d be lying if I said I haven’t before and I wouldn’t again.
I should have kept my mouth shut.

I do genuinely love food.
Breakfast –
Salads –
Mexican –
Chinese –
MashedPotatoes&Corn&Gravy –
ChocolateChipCookies –
PeanutButterPie –
FrenchFries
And I do honestly hate to diet&obsess.

But I was raised by a mother who was raised by a mother who harbored a legitimate fear of “being fat” and no matter the portion, no matter the exercise, no matter the effort – I can feel it building and the fear slithers through my brain like an earthworm escaping water.
Thus, despite my impulsive desire to shield Mr.U from “my issues,” they’ve snuck their way to the surface anyway (not in their darkest entirety, but enough). And I strongly dislike even the idea of his knowledge.
The New Year will introduce our new diet&exercise regimen (I joined his gym finally) and I’ll once again attempt to stifle the beasts within.
For his sake and our sake, my insecurities cannot find their way into 2012.

Red Bracelet

The night my baby killed herself, I made myself a red bracelet. At the time I was severely anorexic – threatened with hospitalization because “my body was eating & peeing out my muscle tissue to sustain itself.” I made myself a bracelet because I didn’t plan to stop. I loved my body for eating itself. I thanked it with a bracelet.
I had to take the bracelet off when I interned for Disney. I’d been “better” for about 6 months, so I figured it was time anyway. Though I loathed myself for my lack of discipline&self-control, I’d moved to Florida to put my life back together after losing the person I’d planned to spend it with. Unwillingly, I took the bracelet off in an attempt to continue forward.
When I moved back – I made a new one. The life I had lived was the life that I loved. A year off can’t change that. Burned onto my wrist (covering my cuts) it reminds me every day of the person I loved, the person I lost, the person I was, the person I’m finding again.

Stepping Alone

“Eventually we’re not going to talk about this. We’re just going to look amazing. We’ll have healthy habits and workout routines and the topic won’t be a necessary discussion. That thought makes me happy. :)”
I’ve said too much already to my Mr.U. We’ve discussed my diet, caloric intake, and exercise routine. Too much for him to know. Too many ideas for him to entertain. The last thing I want is someone who questions my frailty – wonders about my eating habits – makes sure I’ve had my fill before a workout.
I am in love with my habits, my mindsets, my strengths&abilities. I will not let anyone mistake my love for a "problem." Thus, my love must be quieter. I will be tiny. Like I used to be. Without letting anyone know that I want it so bad. I’ll be mindlessly small – unaware of my stature. Someone will tell me to “eat something” and I’ll look at them in confusion, because I’m simply littlenot starving.

“And so I went through the looking glass
stepped into the netherworld
where up is down
and food is greed
where convex mirrors cover the walls
where death is honor
and flesh is weak.
It is ever so easy to go.”

Decision.

I’ve fallen back in love with my beautiful old habits.
3.5 years holding hands with Ana&Mia.
And then I got “better.”
My body is huge and I hate it.
I will not go another day as a fat cow.
Thus, after 2 years of being “healthy”
– or eating every fucking thing in site –
I’m getting back on the horse.
The horse that’s breaking underneath the weight of shitty eating and lazy-non-workouts.

The Beginning

I started throwing up my food my senior year in high school.
I couldn’t say that I know what “triggered” it, though. I tend to get nauseous when I get really upset and one day – during the stress of college applications, prom planning, graduation preparation – I just threw up from feeling overwhelmed. I remember standing up straight over the toilet when I’d finished and noticing how empty I felt. And I loved it. I’d always been conscious of my body, but never truly worried about it and that empty feeling made me think: who will I be if I’m always empty?
It sounds silly, like, “whoa is the popular girl,” but I’d been pleasing everyone around me since I could remember. I did what I was told, but I always did what was necessary to stay on top in my high school social circle. I don’t regret my high school life at all, either. I was always busy, always involved, always spending time with different groups – ensuring I knew everything there was to know about the 500 people who walked the hall of my high school in order to properly perform my position as Year Book Editor-n-Chief. I’d never stopped to think, though, about what I actually wanted. And when I felt that empty feeling, I knew I wanted it.
When people started to notice my slimmer appearance, I was nonchalantly satisfied. My 5'3" frame went from around 140lbs down to 130lbs in what seemed like just a few weeks of toilet sessions. I didn’t think anything of what I was doing. So, I’d lost some weight and wasted some meals – I liked it. I wasn’t doing it for the attention or compliments. I wasn’t doing it because I hated the way I looked or felt insecure. I simply liked it. I liked the power. I liked the control. I liked that I knew exactly what I’d put inside of me and I liked making sure it had all come back out. I liked that it was my thing. It wasn’t basketball because my parents expected me to play. It wasn’t theater because I was supposed to showcase my singing abilities. It wasn’t youth group because I was a good, Christian girl who’d always gone. It was mine. My hobby felt like the one “friend” in my life I voluntarily chose to associate with – the one “friend” who had absolutely no control over me. And she never would’ve wanted it anyway, because we loved each other, we got each other, we enjoyed those moments hunched over puke-filled toilet water.
We were ours.
